London, February 2020. Today the UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE) trade body launched the UK Games Industry Census. This census in partnership with the University of Sheffield is reported to deliver the most comprehensive and detailed assessment of diversity within the UK games industry workforce, ever conducted.

From UKIE

Written by Dr. Mark Taylor of the University of Sheffield and funded via the Arts & Humanities Research Council, this independent analysis focuses on three main areas:  the kinds of work that games industry workers do, their personal characteristics, and their backgrounds. By asking questions that could be compared against those from other sectors, national datasets or by digging into how multiple characteristics fit together, we were able to gain a very clear view of both areas where games can celebrate and where clear challenges lie.

This census was completed by over 3,200 games workers, or around 20% of the overall workforce, between September and October 2019. By using both open and targeted recruitment methods, we were able to ensure a truly representative sample of people working across the sector.

Our team at POC in Play had a look at the information presented and did a breakdown of key facts;

  • 10% people of colour (POC) - 6% Asian, 2% Black, 2% Mixed, 1% Other

  • More women of colour (14%) compared to men of colour and gender minorities of colour (12%)

  • 2X the number of POC in Junior vs Director roles, but the gap is smaller looking at Senior/Lead

  • POC are more likely to be in IT, Biz & Art and least in Design, Audio & Programming

  • 28% of people are from overseas, with 71% in localisation & 1/5 in programming / art

  • 40% of POC in industry are international workers.

We believe there is a lot more change that needs to be made to build an inclusive and diverse workforce. That's why we're supporting UKIE’s #RaiseTheGame pledge to put equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of games.

We also take our own pledge to continually advocate for the POC in Play community and all the intersecting elements that impact our journey, representation and prosperity in games.
